trachea<\/a><\/div><\/li><\/ul>[\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;9\/12&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4>Tracheal collapse (CT) in dogs consists of a respiratory failure syndrome due to crushing of the trachea.<\/h4>\n<p>The dog&#8217;s trachea, made up of small cartilaginous rings, is the channel that connects the throat to the lungs and through which air passes.<\/p>\n<p>A weakening of the tracheal rings results in them collapsing in on themselves and no longer being able to ensure the normal conformation of the trachea and, consequently, proper breathing.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"I-sintomi-del-collasso-tracheale-nel-cane\">Symptoms of tracheal collapse in the dog<\/h4>\n<p>Deformation of the trachea results in decreased incoming airflow.<\/p>\n<p>The most common clinical sign in dogs with tracheal collapse is a <strong>cough,<\/strong> which is dry and deep<strong>, <\/strong>known as a<strong> &#8220;duck-like&#8221;<\/strong> <strong>cough<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, shortness of breath, wheezing and difficulty breathing.<\/p>\n<p>The dog&#8217;s air hunger, in cases of acute respiratory failure, can degenerate and cause dejection, cyanosis and even fainting.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"Le-cause-del-collasso-tracheale-nel-cane\">The causes of tracheal collapse in the dog<\/h4>\n<p>While undoubtedly the disease is dystrophic in origin i.e. resulting from structural and functional degeneration of the trachea, it is also true that the causes remain unknown.<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, there are predisposing factors such as race predisposition and obesity.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, a dog suffering from obesity has greater difficulty in breathing.<\/p>\n<p>The most affected individuals generally belong to small and very small breeds: Chihuahuas, Dwarf Poodles, Pomeranian Foxes, Yorkshire Terriers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This does not exclude, however <\/strong>, that<strong>tracheal collapse can affect a dog<\/strong> regardless of size or breed and to a greater or lesser degree.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"Classificazione-dei-gradi-di-collasso-tracheale\">Classification of the degrees of tracheal collapse<\/h4>\n<p>The classification of the different degrees of tracheal collapse in the dog and thus, its severity, is based on the percentage of reduction in the inner caliber of the tracheal rings.<\/p>\n<p><em>Grade I: 25% reduction<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Grade II: 50% reduction<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Grade III: 75% reduction<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Grade IV: 90% reduction<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"La-diagnosi-e-la-terapia\">Diagnosis and treatment<\/h4>\n<p>The veterinarian will take the dog for radiography and endoscopy to determine the severity of the collapse and its location.<\/p>\n<p>As long as the disease is in one of the first three grades, drug therapy is used, and only for the fourth case is surgery required.<\/p>\n<p>The surgery consists of either reconstructing the trachea or placing a stent i.e., a retractor inside it: the <em>stent<\/em> supports the tracheal walls, preventing them from collapsing and allowing the dog to breathe normally.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, tracheal collapse is a <strong>chronic, progressive and irreversible condition <\/strong>, but delaying its complications and preventing its aggravation allows the dog a good quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>If neglected, tracheal collapse can trigger bronchitis, tracheitis, or even pulmonary hypertension, which in the long run can develop into heart failure.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"Precauzioni-e-accorgimenti-se-il-cane-soffre-di-collasso-della-trachea\">Precautions and precautions if your dog suffers from collapse of the trachea<\/h4>\n<p>In addition to the drug therapy prescribed by your veterinarian, if your dog suffers from tracheal collapse, you should implement a number of steps and precautions to improve his quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>A dog&#8217;s cough usually worsens with excitement, stress, exercise or extreme temperatures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protect it from the <strong>scorching heat<\/strong> and <strong>intense cold<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Keep it away from spaces polluted by <strong>smoke and strong<\/strong>, acrid, pungent <strong>odors<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>keep its <strong>weight stable<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Avoid the collar and <strong>use the <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicalaveterinaria.it\/it\/pettorina-ad-h-o-collare-cosa-e-meglio-per-il-cane-e-perche\/\">harness<\/a><\/strong> so as not to put pressure on the neck<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If
