Kurilian Bobtail: the kitty with the pompom tail

The Kurilian Bobtail is a natural feline breed native to the Kuril Islands, an archipelago located between the Russian peninsula of Kamchatka and the Japanese island of Hokkaidō.

The geographic isolation of these islands has favored the spontaneous development of this feline population with distinctive genetic characteristics, particularly the short tail.

The presence of these cats on the islands has been documented for at least two centuries.

However, organized selection and breeding of the breed began in Russia only during the 20th century, when some specimens were transferred to the continent and subjected to a breeding program aimed at preserving their morphological and behavioral characteristics.

The recognition of race

Official recognition among feline breeds came in the 1990s by major international feline associations including FIFe (Fédération Internationale Féline) and TICA (The International Cat Association).

The Kurilian Bobtail is recognized in both short-haired and semi-long-haired varieties.

It is a medium-large cat, characterized by a powerful and muscular physical structure.

The breed’s most iconic trait is its short tail, generally between 3 and 8 centimeters long, composed of deformed, naturally angled vertebrae that form a coiled or knotted structure.

Each tail is unique: no two Kurilian Bobtails have the same caudal structure.

The abundant hair contributes to the “pompom” effect.

The size and weight of the Kurilian Bobtail

The Kurilian Bobtail is a medium to large cat, characterized by a powerful and muscular physical structure.

Males are significantly larger and more massive than females.

They generally weigh between 5 and 7 kilograms, with specimens that can exceed 7 kilograms where there is a particularly strong structure.

Females, on the other hand, settle between 3.5 and 5 kg.

Kurilian Bobtails is recognized in both short-haired and semi-long-haired varieties.

The coat has a soft, silky texture, and in the semi-long variety, more prominent fringing is observed on the tail, collar and back of the thighs.

The character of the Kurilian Bobtail

The character of the Kurilian Bobtail is one of its strengths.

This is a sociable and affectionate but not intrusive cat.

It is known for its strong ability to establish a stable bond with its household and tends to actively participate in domestic life.

It is generally well tolerant of children, compatible with other cats and even dogs.

It is agile, quick and curious. It loves to climb and observe the environment from high positions.

An interesting peculiarity is its familiarity with water.

In its areas of origin, it is also valued for its ability to catch small fish along the banks.

In fact, many specimens show no aversion to wet environments and sometimes display curiosity about running water.

The Kurilian Bobtail is a robust and hardy cat

As a natural breed, the Kurilian Bobtail is generally considered robust and hardy, with an average life expectancy of 14 to 18 years.

No severe genetic disorders typical and systematically associated with the breed are apparent in the current state of knowledge.

However, as with all cats, regular veterinary checkups are essential.

Appropriate vaccination protocols must be followed, but it is equally important to monitor weight and nutrition to prevent obesity and metabolic disorders.

The particular conformation of the tail, although derived from a genetic mutation, is not generally associated with neurological or motor problems.
